Arthur was a dairy farmer at Cohuna, VIC - formerly from Bacchus Marsh(3) - when he enlisted at Bendigo, VIC, in the AIF on the 2nd of February 1916, aged 36. In March he was allocated to the 38th Battalion, B Company before embarking aboard the HMAT A54 Runic in June. Arthur was admitted to the ships's hospital in late July, suffering from measles before disembarking in early August at Plymouth, England and admitted to Devonport Military Hospital.

In September 1916 Arthur was discharged from hospital, but a month later was briefly admitted to Delhi Hospital with influenza. He was again in hospital with influenza in March 1917 but finally joined his unit in France in August. Arthur was wounded in action and reported missing on the 13th of October, during the First Battle for Passchendaele. He died three days later.

That will be A.W. Turnour, a friend of mine, who had had a brother killed [26.9.17]. He went over at Passchendale in October. I did not see him again after we started. We could not get onto the ridge and had to fall back. Three days later Turnour was found out in front by stretcher-bearers, half buried in a shell hole and badly wounded by a shell in the stomach. The stretcher-bearers told me that it was probably because he was buried in mud that he had kept alive. He died before they got him to the dressing-station and I do not know if he was buried there or further back.
