Joseph Boyd was born at Italian Gully, Scarsdale, VIC, in 1897, to Joseph Boyd and Annie Sophia Laughlin. Joseph had a brother, Raymond, who is also remembered in the Avenue.

Joseph had already served in the Senior Cadets for two years and the Citizens Forces for six months, and was a dairy farmer when he enlisted at Melbourne, in the 38th Battalion, D Company, on the 14th of February 1916, at the age of nearly 19 - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. He embarked aboard the HMAT A54 Runic at Melbourne in June and disembarked at Plymouth, England, in August.

A month after arriving in England Joseph was hospitalised for two weeks with measles, before proceeding to France at the end of November 1916. With the 38th Battalion, Joseph would have been in a number of major battles including; Messines, Broodseinde and Passchendaele.

He returned to England in March 1919 and departed for Australia aboard the Karagola in April and arrived home in June. Joseph was discharged from the AIF on the 27th of July 1919. He died in Parkville, VIC, in 1955, aged 57

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.
