John was born in Gordon, VIC to William Henry Nolan and Sarah Greene. John had a brother, William, who is also remembered in the Avenue.
John was a driver and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 8th Light Horse Regiment, Reinforcements on the 5th of October 1916, aged nearly 22. He embarked with the Camel Corps aboard the HMAT A44 Vestalia in December, disembarking at Suez, Egypt in January 1917.
In February 1917 John joined the 4th Light Horse Training Regiment and a month later was attached to the 4th Light Horse Brigade Headquarters. In April 1919 John forfeited two days pay for leaving camp without permission and a month later lost one day's pay for riding in shorts. He embarked from Kantara aboard the Essex in June, returning to Australia in July and was discharged from the AIF in September.
John died at Caulfield, VIC in 1939, aged 45.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
