John was born at Melton on the 22nd of April 1894 to John McPherson and Margaret McPherson.

John was a clerk and gave his address as Melton, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 6th Reinforcements, 4th Light Horse Regiment on the 13th of May 1915, aged 21 - he had previously served in the Volunteer Light Horse. He was given a send-off(2) in Melton before he embarked aboard the HMAT A40 Ceramic in June, disembarking in Egypt some time later.

John was with his unit at Gallipoli in October, posted to C Squadron and returned to Egypt in late December. He was admitted to hospital in August 1916 for a week with influenza. In February 1917 he was admitted to the 26th Stationary Hospital with a Potts' Fracture. As part of the 4th Light Horse Regiment he possibly participated in the charge of the 4th Light Horse Brigade at Beersheba, in October(3). John was promoted to Lance Corporal in December and in January 1918 was a Temporary Staff Quartermaster‑Sergeant for a month and in August was a Temporary Corporal briefly. John was promoted to Sergeant in May 1919 before embarking for home aboard the Essex in June, disembarking in Australia in July and was discharged from the AIF in September.

John enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 - V361411 - and was discharged in 1945 as private with the 20th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps.

John died at Kew, VIC in 1974, aged 79.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for the Bacchus Marsh ANA.
