James was born in Carlton, VIC cir 1883. He was a labourer and gave his address as Carlton, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 6th Reinforcements, 8th Light Horse Regiment on the 31st of December 1914, aged 31. He embarked aboard the HMAT A66 Uganda in June 1915, disembarking in Egypt some time later.

James joined his unit at Gallipoli in October 1915 and returned to Egypt in December. In April he transferred to the 12th Australian Field Artillery Brigade Ammunition Column. A month later he spent two weeks in hospital followed by a further two weeks in a convalescent depot - poor constitution. James embarked for England in early August and by December was on his way to France where he was eventually transferred to the 11th Australian Field Artillery Brigade and posted to the 43rd Battery. About this time an A was added to his Regimental Number.

In late July 1917 James was wounded in action - gassed - and was invalided back to England and admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge, Birmingham. In late August James was discharged from hospital to two weeks furlough before embarking from England aboard the Port Lyttleton in October, returning to Australia in December and discharged from the AIF in January 1918 - medically unfit, gas poisoning.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh.
