George was born at Lake Bolac(1), VIC in 1890 to Charles Moore and Marianne Young. George had three brothers, Peter, David and James, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

George was a station hand and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 1st Divisional Ammunition Column on the 20th of August 1914 - only two weeks after war was declared - aged 24. He embarked aboard the HMAT A9 Shropshire in October , disembarking in Egypt some time later where he spent a few days in hospital with measles.

In late April 1915 George landed at Gallipoli. After returning to Egypt he was promoted to Corporal before arriving in France in March 1916. In November George is diagnosed with bronchitis before transferring to England and admitted to hospital, discharged to furlough in February 1917 when he married May Yarwood. George rejoined his unit in France in August but a few weeks later was admitted to the 59th General Hospital, St Omer, France with laryngitis. He rejoined his unit in Belgium in mid October but was admitted to hospital three days later. In November he transfered to England and was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital, Stourbridge, Birmingham - chronic laryngitis. George was discharged to two weeks furlough in December but at the end of his leave he was admitted to Lord Derby War Hospital, Winwick with an injury to his left knee. He was discharged from hospital in March 1918 and in April proceeded to join the Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery when he was again admitted to hospital with an infected left leg. George was discharged from hospital three months later and embarked for Australia in December aboard the Port Hacking, returning to Australia in January 1919 and was discharged from the AIF in March.

George enlisted in the Australian Army in 1941 - V13952 - and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Sergeant.

Notes

  1. His WW2 service records state he was born at Parupa. There is a road and a lake with that name close to Lake Bolac.
