Bernard was a road contractor and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh when he enlisted in the AIF on the 24th of January 1916, aged almost 29. In February he was appointed to B Company in the newly formed 37th Battalion and embarked aboard the HMAT A34 Persic in June, disembarking at Plymouth, England in late July.

A few days after arriving in France in late November 1916, Bernard was admitted to No. 2 Casualty Clearing Station, suffering from pharyngitis. A month later he was admitted to the 7th General Hospital, Saint-Omer, France - mumps.

On the 7th of June 1917, during the Battle of Messines Bernard suffered a gunshot wound to the left thigh - dangerous - and was admitted to the 7th Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, France. Two weeks later he was admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester, England where he remained for two months until transferred to the 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford - discharged in September. Later that month Bernard embarked aboard the Borda, returning to Australia in November and was discharged from the AIF in June 1918.

Bernard died in 1953 and is buried at Maddingley Cemetery, Bacchus Marsh.
