Peter was born at either Violet Town or Benalla, VIC around 1871 - 1873 to Peter Leitch and Mary Munro. He married Frances Power in 1899 and they had four children, Queenie(2) b. 1902 at Tyntynder, Peter Murray b. 1905 at Charlton, William Frederick b. 1908 at Bacchus Marsh and Stella May b. 1910 at Bacchus Marsh.

Peter was a labourer at the Darley Brick Company(3) in Bacchus Marsh when he enlisted in the AIF, 11th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion on the 2nd of August 1915, aged 44. He embarked aboard the RMS Orontes in March 1916, disembarking at Suez, Egypt in April.

In July 1917 Peter was in England and joined the 21st Battalion in France in August. Shortly afterward he was detached for duty with the 2nd Australian Division Salvage Company. In December he was wounded in action - shell wounds to right thigh, left hand and a compound fracture of the femur - in Belgium and admitted to the 22nd General Hospital Carmiers, France a few days later. Peter was invalided back to England in April 1918 and admitted to the Military Hospital, Tooting, England then to the 1stAustralian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield in July and discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth a few days later.

Peter embarked from England aboard the Arawa in September 1918, returning to Australia in November and was discharged from the AIF in May 1920.

Peter died at Caulfield, VIC in 1943 aged 73.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
