Alfred Hallam was born in 1891 at Collingwood to James Hallam and Mary Hammett. He married Emma Lowe in 1911 using the name Knight; after he divorced her he married Violet Florence Knee in 1913 using the name Hallam.

Alfred was a farm labourer and gave his address as West Melbourne(2), VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 11th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion on the 31st of July 1915, aged almost 23. In October he embarked aboard the HMAT A71 Nestor, disembarking in Egypt some time later. Alfred transferred to the 6th Battalion in February 1916 before embarking from Alexandria, Egypt in March.

Alfred disembarked at Marseilles, France on the last day of March 1916. A month later he accidently shot himself in the left foot while cleaning his rifle in a trench near Fleursaix, France and was admitted to Special Hospital, Boescheyse, France - later transferred to hospital in England. He rejoined his unit in the field in December. In August 1917 Alfred was promoted to Lance Corporal. On the 4th of October 1917 Alfred was wounded and admitted to No. 64 Field Ambulance - gunshot wound both legs amputated. He died the next day at No. 41 Casualty Clearing Station and was buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, Belgium.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.

Notes

  1. His real surname is Hallam.
    He married Emma Lowe in 1911 using the name Knight (later divorced) and also enlisted using the name Knight.
    According to the indexes of BDM and later parts of his Service Record his real name was Hallam.
  2. He may have been working in the Bacchus Marsh area as he is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour. Also the Bacchus Marsh Ladies Patriotic Guild had sent parcels to him when he was overseas during the war.
