Herbert (Bert) was born at Creswick, VIC on the 23rd of January 1891 to John William King and Mary Jane Angwin. In 1919 Herbert married Jane Elizabeth McDonald, born Bacchus Marsh in 1895. Jane King died in 1951, aged 56.
Herbert was a bank clerk at the National Bank at Lavers Hill(3), VIC when he enlisted at Colac in the AIF, 22nd Battalion on the 27th of January 1915, aged 24. He was promoted to Corporal before embarking in May aboard the HMAT A38 Ulysses and further promoted to Temporary Sergeant before disembarking in Egypt some time later.
Bert landed at Gallipoli in the first week of September 1915 and was promoted to Sergeant in October before returning to Egypt in December. He embarked from Alexandria, Egypt in March 1916
After arriving in France in March 1916 Bert was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in August and to Lieutenant in November. In March 1917 he was seconded to the 6th Infantry Training Battalion in England but a month later was admitted to the Military Hospital, Fargo for two months with appendicitis. At the end of September Bert rejoined his unit in France from secondment. At the end of August 1918 he was appointed Temporary Captain but three days later suffered a gunshot wound during the Battle of Mont St Quentin and was admitted to the 8th General Hospital, Rouen, France then invalided back to England. Bert was appointed Captain in November and in December embarked for Australia aboard the Takada. In July 1919 his appointment was terminated.
In 1940 Bert enlisted in the Australian Army and was dicharged in 1943 as a Captain in the 9th Reserve Battalion.
Herbert died at Daylesford, VIC in 1967, Aged 76.
He is remembered in the Daylesford Christ Church Honour Roll.
