Hector Norman Blake was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, Australia on the 18th of November 1899 to Edwin Blake and Margarethe Schultze. Two of his brothers, William and Edwin, are also remembered in the Avenue .

He was a clerk, living in Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF at Ballarat on the 23rd of November 1917, his parents' consent having been given. Hector had served four years in the Cadets and was still serving in the Citizens Forces. He embarked from Sydney aboard the RMS Orontes in June 1918, disembarking at Liverpool, England in August.

Upon arriving in England he was immediately transferred to the 60th Battalion. Two months later he transferred to the 8th Battalion only to be hospitalised for a short time with Influenza. By early December he had joined the 8th Battalion in France. Early in 1919 he was detached for duty with the 2nd AI Brigade, rejoining the 8th Battalion in May.

In July 1919 he was admitted to the 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, Bulford Camp, England. In September he embarked for Australia aboard the Port Sydney, arriving back in Australia in November. He was discharged from the AIF on the 5th of December 1919.

After the war Hector lived for many years in New Zealand (his brother Edwin lived in New Zealand). In July 1940 he enlisted at Royal Park, VIC, in the Australian Army - V4587 - and was discharged in December 1946 as a Staff Sergeant with the Army Pay Corps, District Accounts Office (Victoria).

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour.
