Robert was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC on the 29th of July 1884 to Robert Blyth Kerr and Jane Elizabeth Hine. Robert later married Margaret Todd, whose brother Colin is also remembered in the Avenue. Robert also had a brother-in-law, Duncan Ross , who is also remembered in the Avenue.
Robert was a farmer at Rowsley, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 12th Reinforcements, 12th Field Artillery Brigade on the 10th of October 1916, aged 33. He embarked aboard the HMAT A11 Ascanius in May 1917, disembarking at Devonport, England in July.
Proceeding overseas to France in September 1917 he transferred to the 8th Field Artillery Brigade. In October Robert was wounded but was able to return to duty the same day. In May 1918 he spent a month in hospital suffering from trench fever, rejoining his unit in early July. Robert was granted three weeks leave in England in September 1918 and a further two weeks in March 1919, this time in Paris.
In May 1919 he returned to England and embarked for Australia aboard the P Hubertus in July, returning to Australia in August and was discharged from the AIF a month later.
Robert enlisted in the Australian Army, 20th Battalion, Volunteer Defence Corps in May 1942 but died at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1944, aged 60. He is buried at Maddingley Cemetery, Bacchus Marsh.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh.
