Harry was born in 1890 in Bacchus Marsh, VIC to William Grant and Betsy McDonald. Harry had a brother, Robert, a cousin, Robert Reid and a brother-in-law, James Connor, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Harry was a farmer in Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted at Geelong, VIC in the AIF, 8th Reinforcements, 58th Battalion on the 24th of October 1916, aged 26. He embarked aboard the HMAT A7 Medic in December and disembarked at Plymouth, England in February 1917.

After a short stay in hospital Harry proceeded overseas to France in July 1917, joining his unit at the start of August. In October he spent a few days in hospital with defective vision before again being admitted to hospital in December, suffering from appendicitis - he rejoined his unit in early February 1918. Harry was granted leave in England in late August but shortly after returning was again in hospital - defective hearing. After two weeks he was discharged from hospital and returned to England where he embarked for Australia aboard the Argyllshire and was discharged from the AIF in March 1919 - defective hearing.

Harry died in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in December 1936, aged 46.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour, the Roll of Honour for the Bacchus Marsh ANA and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh.
