Clarence was born at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1897 to Joseph William Earl and Margaret Adelaide Loughlin. Clarence had a brother, Everett (Graham), who is also remembered in the Avenue.

He was a clerk with the National Bank of Australia and gave his address as Bacchus Marsh, VIC ⁽²⁾ when he enlisted in the AIF on the 31^st of August 1915, aged 18. He embarked aboard the HMAT A43 Barunga in April 1916 with the 15^th Reinforcements, 8^th Light Horse Regiment.

Clarence was with the 3^rd Light Horse Training Regiment in Egypt in May 1916 and transferred to the 3^rd Double Squadron at the end of July. In July Clarence was briefly in hospital with influenza and then in September with impetigo. In October he was hospitalised for a month, suffering from abscess(es) and then in early December spent five days in hospital with Otorrhoea.

Clarence transferred back to the 8^th Light Horse Regiment in mid December 1916 before being admitted to hospital with pleurisy until transferred to a Convalescent Hospital in February 1917 - in March he broke out of the convalescent hospital for two hours, awarded, five days loss of pay. Later in March he was admitted to the 14^th Australian General Hospital for a month with pemphigus, left hand. In May he spent two weeks in hospital with pyrexia.

In July 1917 Clarence embarked for Australia for discharge - debility after pleurisy - from Suez aboard the Port Sydney, returning to Australia in August and discharged from the AIF in September.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour.
