Lance Corporal Robert George Davison

Robert was born at Rowsley, VIC, in 1894 to David Davison and Margaret Pace. Robert had two brothers, Alan and Norman and a cousin James - KIA - who are also remembered in the Avenue.
His aunt, Elizabeth Allan (formerly married to Robert Clark, nee Davison) had two sons, Archibald and William, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Robert was a farmer at Rowsley, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF on the 16^th of August 1915, aged 21. He embarked aboard the HMAT A11 Ascanius in November with the 12^th Reinforcements, 8^th Australian Light Horse Regiment.

In late December 1915 he reported for duty with the 8^th Light Horse Regiment, Heliopolis, Egypt - the 8^th LHR had just returned from Gallipoli. In March 1916, Robert was hospitalised for two weeks with mumps, rejoining his unit in mid April to continue the defence of the Suez Canal. In early August Robert suffered a gunshot wound to the chest (probably during the Battle of Romani) and did not rejoin his unit until September. He was promoted to Lance Corporal in May 1919 and in July embarked from Alexandria, Egypt, for leave in UK.

Robert embarked from England aboard the Port Denison in September 1919, returning to Australia in November and was discharged from the AIF in February 1920. He died at Swan Hill, VIC in 1965, aged 71.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.

Notes

1. Davidson is the name in his service records but it should be Davison.
   It seems strange that during the war even his father used the name Davidson.
2. He was promoted to Lance Corporal shortly before returning home.
