George Davis was born at Werribee, VIC in 1890 to Harry Davis and Ann Elizabeth Hobbs.

George is his great uncle

George was an engine-driver and gave his address as Balliang East, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF on the 24th of March 1915, aged 24. He embarked aboard the HMAT A14 Euripides with the 24th Battalion, Machine Gun Section in May.

After disembarking in Egypt and undertaking further training he landed a Gallipoli on the 4th of September 1915, serving at Lone Pine. At the end of October he was admitted to hospital, suffering from enteric fever then transferred back to Egypt, then to England in December.

George joined his unit in France at the end of July 1916 but on the 1st of August died of wounds at the 5th Australian Field Ambulance, France during the Battle of Pozieres. He is buried at Becourt Military Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, France.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour. He is also remembered at the Werribee War Memorial.

  1. His rank was Driver which is equivalent to a Private but indicates a role.
