Patrick Barry was born at Rowsley, VIC, in 1886, to John Barry and Ellen Ward.

He was a labourer when he enlisted in the AIF at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, on the 13th of July 1915, at the age of 28. He was in the 4th Light Horse, 11th Reinforcements for a couple of months then joined the 8th Light Horse, 13th Reinforcements at the end of November, as a Private. In January 1916 he embarked aboard the HMAT Vestalia, disembarking in Eygpt in late February.

In early April 1916 he transferred to the 45th Battery of the 12th Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner. Shortly afterwards he spent 10 days in hospital with Influenza.

In early June 1916 he disembarked at Marseilles, France. He was granted 10 days leave in England in August 1917. In February 1918 he was promoted to Lance Bombardier. Again he had leave in England at the end of September 1918. He was detached to Calais on duty for three weeks in February 1919 and returned to England at the beginning of April, embarking for Australia in April aboard the Borda.

Patrick Barry returned to Australia at the end of June and was discharged from the AIF on the 18th of August 1919. He died at Seaford, VIC, in 1971 aged 84.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honor.

  1. Service Number is 1794; probably a transcription error at some point.
  2. He was a private in the Light Horse but transferred to the 12th FAB and became a Lance Bombardier.
