Henry Theophilus Barry was born at Preston, VIC, on the 6th of April 1899, to John Joseph Barry and Susannah Tulk. Henry had three brothers, Percival, Patrick and Richard, who are also remembered in the Avenue. There was another brother, Clement who enlisted but for medical reasons was discharged.
He was living in Bacchus Marsh, VIC and working as a Telegraphist when he enlisted in the AIF, in Melbourne on the 21st of February 1918, at the age of nearly 19, his parents' consent having been obtained. He had previously served in the Cadets and the Citizens Forces. As part of the 13th General Service Reinforcements he embarked at Melbourne, on the SS Zealandic on the 5th of October 1918 as a Private.
In December he disembarked at London and was allotted to the 22nd Battalion. In February 1919 he went to France and shortly afterwards was transferred to the Australian General Base Depot. In June he returned to England and by September he had returned to Australia aboard the Ulysses.
Henry Barry was discharged from the AIF on the 17th of September 1919 and died at Shepparton, VIC, in 1963, at the age of 64.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for the Bacchus Marsh ANA.
