Martin was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1898 to Martin Cosgrove and Mary Seery. Martin had a brother, James and a brother-in-law, Walter (Ted) Phillips, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Martin was a labourer, living in Bacchus Marsh, VIC. when he enlisted in the AIF, 17th Reinforcements, 4th Light Horse Regiment on the 26th of February 1916, aged 17(2). He embarked aboard the HMAT A67 Orsova in December, disembarking at Plymouth, England in February 1917.

At the end of September 1917 Martin was transferred to Artillery Details before proceeding to France with the Reserve Brigade Australian Artillery where he was attached to the 1st Divisional Ammunition Column in November as a Gunner. A few days later he transferred to the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, 5th Battery. In December he was appointed as a Driver.

Martin was granted two weeks leave in November 1918 before returning to England in April 1919. He embarked for Australia aboard the Konig Frederich August in June 1919.

He was living in Annuello, VIC (south of Robinvale) in 1932. Martin died at Heidelberg, VIC, in 1936, aged 38.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for the Coimadai State School. He is also remembered in the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.
