George William Cameron was born at Dookie, VIC, in 1880, to Dugald Cameron and Hughina Oliver.

At the age of 33, George was a farmer at Dandenong, VIC, when he enlisted at Melbourne in the AIF, 8th Battalion, 13th Reinforcements, on the 17th of May 1915. He embarked at Melbourne aboard the HMAT A64 Demosthenes at the end of December, disembarking in Egypt some time later. He disembarked at Marseilles, France, in April 1916.

George was admitted to hospital in Etaples, before joining the 8th Battalion in the Field, in the middle of July 1916. At the end of August, George took part in a very successful raid on the enemy trenches - he was mentioned in dispatches(1) by Brigadier General H B Walker 6/10/1916. In October he received a gunshot wound to the arm and was admitted to York Military Hospital, England.

He rejoined the 8th Battalion in France in August 1917 and on the 20th of September 1917, he was killed in action. He is remembered in the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belguim.
