Stanley was born in London, England in 1892. He was a driver and gave his address as Albert Park, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 5th Battalion, C Company on the 20th of August 1914, aged 22. He embarked aboard the HMAT A3 Orvietto in October and disembarked in Egypt in December.

On the 25th of April 1915 Stanley landed at Gallipoli and was wounded in action - he rejoined his unit in mid May. Stanley was admitted to a Field Ambulance in late August suffering from diarrhoea. He was then admitted to the 1st General Hospital, Egypt - enteritis. before he embarked for Australia in late September.

Stanley returned Australia in October 1915 and returned to duty with the Royal Field Artillery Reserve. He re-embarked aboard the HMAT A40 Ceramic in late November, with the 12th Reinforcements,7th Battalion and disembarked in Egypt some time later.

In February 1916 Stanley transferred to the 59th Battalion and was promoted to Lance Corporal a month later and then to Corporal in late May before he embarked from Alexandria, Egypt in June.

After he disembarked at Marseilles, France at the end of June 1916 Stanley attended a school of instruction for five days. Three days later, on the 19th of July, during the disaster that was the Battle of Fromelles, he was reported missing in action - later reported killed. Some time later his body was recovered and buried in Ration Farm Military Cemetery, France.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.

  1. His original Service No. was 427 but was later changed to 4017.
  2. He was originally in the 5th Battalion but transferred to the 59th Battalion.
