William Brennan was born at Carlton, VIC, in 1893, to John Brennan and Annie Russell.

He was living in North Melbourne, VIC and working as a labourer, when he enlisted in the AIF, on the 6th of January 1915. In April he embarked aboard the HMAT A18 Wiltshire with the 4th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion.

William was at Gallipoli in May 1915 and in early August suffered a a shell wound to the face, breast, hand and knee. William was admitted to hospital in Malta shortly thereafter. At the end of September he was transferred to England and admitted to hospital at Cardiff. He rejoined the 8th Battalion in Egypt at the start of April 1916. In May he transferred to the 60th Battalion before embarking at Alexandria for France.

In July 1916 William was lucky to survive the Battle of Fromelles; a disaster where the 60th Battalion was all but destroyed, 757 casualties out of a total of 887.

In February 1917 he was detached to the Assistant Provost Marshal, then in November he transferred from the 60th Battalion to the Assistant Provost Marshal, 5th Australian Division, Traffic Control in France where he remained until returning to England in January 1919.

William returned to Australia at the end of April 1919 aboard the Kashmir. He died at Fitzroy, VIC, in 1928, at the age of 34.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honor.
