Ernest was born at Springhurst, VIC in 1894 to James Smith and Jane Craig. Ernest had a brother, Richard, who is also remembered in the Avenue.

Ernest Ernie was a carter and gave his address as Rowsley, VIC - near Bacchus Marsh - when he he enlisted at Bacchus Marsh in the AIF on the 31st of January 1916, aged 21½. He embarked aboard the HMAT A71 Nestor with the 16th Reinforcements, 23rd Battalion, C Company in October and disembarked at Plymouth, England in mid November.

In early February 1917 Ernest proceeded to France and joined his unit at the end of March. At the beginning of the Second Battle of Bullecourt he was killed instantly by a bullet wound to the head. He was buried in the field by the Pioneers.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour for pupils of Parwan State School. He is also also remembered at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France.
