Raymond Boyd was born at Scarsdale, VIC, on the 11th June 1894, to Joseph Boyd and Annie Sophia Laughlin. Raymond had a brother, Joseph, who is also remembered in the Avenue.

On the 21st of December 1914 Raymond enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne, aged 21 - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. In February 1915 he embarked aboard the HMAT A46 Clan McGillivray with the 2nd Reinforcements, 8th Battalion.

He would have joined the 8th Battalion sometime later that year at Gallipoli and would have been part of the battle of Lone Pine. In December 1915 he spent a month in hospital at Malta with appendicitis before embarking for Egypt at the beginning of April 1916. He left Egypt at the end of July and arrived in England ten days later.

Two weeks after arriving in England Raymond was AWOL for five days. At the end of January 1917 he was again AWOL, this time for three months. Three days after he was apprehended, he escaped detention. When he was again apprehended he faced a Court Martial - he was sentenced to 120 days confinement and forfeit 227 days pay.

In November 1917 Raymond joined his unit in France. At the end of December he was gassed and admitted to Queen Mary's Military Hospital(1), England. He was AWOL twice more for several hours before again rejoining his unit in France in May 1918. He was AWOL again in November for four days and forfeited 31 days pay before returning to England in December. At the end of January 1919 he embarked for Australia aboard the Ceramic.

Raymond arrived back in Australia at the end of March and was discharged from the AIF on the 25th of May 1919.

He lived in Sydney after the war and was married when he enlisted in the Australian Army - N61006 - in November 1939. Raymond was discharged from the Army in April 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant. He was still living in Sydney in 1954.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honor, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh.
