Harry was probably born in England(1) about 1889 and he married Nellie Moffatt in 1920. Harry had two brothers-in-law, Harry and Percy Moffatt, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

Harry Ruddick is one of the most disappointed individuals of the town, he having volunteered no less than five times (twice in one day) for the army, and once for the navy. Defective teeth being the cause of his rejection, otherwise he was compliented by the examining medical men upon his fitness. He intends to insist upon his enlistment, even if he has to go back to the old country.

Harry embarked aboard the RMS Orontes as a fireman in early August 1915(2). In October he wrote of his enlistment.

Oct. 5th 1915. I enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery yesterday. I will be in Camp by the time you get this. I had no trouble what ever, as they are giving them false teeth here.
