Arthur was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1898 to Hutchison Gibson Paterson and Eliza Laura Freeman. Arthur had a brother, George, who is also remembered in the Avenue.

Arthur was a clerk when he enlisted in the AIF, 22nd Reinforcements, 2nd Division Signals Company on the 22nd of January 1917, aged almost 19. He embarked aboard the HMAT A29 Suevic in June, disembarking at Liverpool, England in August.

In March 1918 Arthur proceeded overseas to France where he transferred to the Australian Corps Signals Company. He had leave in England in January 1919 and again in Paris in February before returning to England and embarking for home aboard the Rio Pardo in May, returning to Australia in in July and was discharged from the AIF in August.

Arthur applied to join the Administrative and special duties branch of the RAAF in Hobart in 1942.

Arthur Died at Balwyn, VIC in 1957, aged 59.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour, the Essendon St. Johns Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour, the ANA Roll of Honour, Flemington Branch No. 69 and the Pakenham Associated Stock & Station Agents of Melbourne Roll of Honour.

Notes

  1. The unit designated by 1st AAC must be a mistake.
    He enlisted with the 2nd Division Signals Company and later transferred to the Australian Corps Signals Company.
