

William was born in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1872 to Paul Johnston(2) and Susan Hamilton. William married May Mabbett in 1903 and they had seven children - one deceased.
William was a labourer and gave his address as Officer, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 12th Reinforcements, 21st Battalion on the 1st of February 1916, aged 43. He embarked aboard the HMAT A14 Euripides in April, arriving in England some time later.
In September 1916 William joined his unit in Belgium but in November was killed in action.
He is listed on the Roll of Honour for Bacchus Marsh, held by the RSL at Bacchus Marsh and also on the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh, held by the Bacchus Marsh Uniting Church.
