Sydney was born at Newport, VIC in 1895 to Harry McDougall(1) and Elizabeth Chipman. Before retuning from service overseas Sydney married Margaret Ellen Gapper.

Sydney was a a farm labourer in the Balliang district near Bacchus Marsh when he enlisted at Geelong in the AIF, 18th Reinforcements, 22nd Battalion on the 20th of September 1916, aged 20. He embarked aboard the HMAT A20 Hororata in late November, disembarking at Plymouth, England in late January 1917.

He joined the 22nd Battalion in the field in May 1917. However in January 1918 he was court martialed for desertion.

... in that he failed to accompany his platoon to the front line at 2PM on 13-1-18 and remained absent until plaved [sic] under arrest at Romarin Camp at 10PM on 22.1.18.

He was sentenced to 5 yrs P S. There must of been some mitigating circumstances because in February his sentence was suspended and then in May it was remitted! In July Sydney was wounded in action - gassed - and invalided back to England and admitted to Graylingwell War Hospital, Chichester. Sydney married Margaret Ellen Gapper in April 1919 before embarking from England in August aboard the Ceramic with his wife - returning to Australia in September and was discharged from the AIF in December. He was living in Balliang in 1934.

Sydney died in Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1980, aged 85.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
