Walter was born at Numurkah, VIC on the 9th of May 1893 to Charles Medling(3) and Annie Duncan.

Walter was a bank clerk and gave his address as Numurkah, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 11th Reinforcements, 14th Battalion on the 12th of July 1915, aged 22. He embarked aboard the HMAT A71 Nestor in October, disembarking in Egypt some time later. In January 1916 he was admitted to the 4th Auxiliary Hospital, Cairo for three weeks - measles - before embarking from Alexandria in June.

After disembarking at Marseilles, France in June 1916, Walter was involved in the Battle of Pozieres in August and shortly after suffered a shell wound to the left shoulder and was evacuated back to England and admitted to hospital - discharged to furlough at the end of the month. In October he was detached for duty with the Australian Army Pay Corps and in February 1917, promoted to 2nd Corporal. Walter was married in September and promoted to Corporal in November 1918. In October 1919 he was briefly a Temporary Sergeant before embarking for home with his wife and child in December, returning to Australia in February 1920 and was discharged from the AIF in May.

Walter was a bank manager at Scottsdale, TAS when he enlisted in the Australian Army in 1942 and was discharged from the 3rd Tasmanian Battalion as a Lieutenant in 1945.

Walter died at Scottsdale, TAS in 1946, aged 52.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
