John was born in Dundee, Scotland about 1895 to Charles Jamieson Low and Elizabeth Hessin(1)(2). John had two brothers, John Aitkin and Charles, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

John was a labourer in Bacchus Marsh when he enlisted in the AIF, 46th Battalion on the 24th of December 1915, aged not quite 21. He embarked aboard the HMAT A32 Themistocles in July 1916, disembarking at Plymouth, England in September.

In December 1916 he joined his unit in France. John was wounded in action in late March 1918 - gassed - and invalided back to England and admitted to the Military Hospital, Frensham a week later. He embarked aboard the Berrima in early January 1919, returning to Australia in mid February and was discharged from the AIF in March.

John died at Diamond Creek, VIC in 1984, aged 89.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
