Grant was born at Bacchus Marsh in 1889(1) to James Kerr and Margaret McDonald.

Grant was a farmer at Bacchus Marsh, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF on the 19th of July 1916, aged 27. He embarked aboard the HMAT A71 Nestor in early October, disembarking at Plymouth, England in mid November.

In February 1917 Grant joined the 57th Battalion in France. He suffered a shell wound to the head and hand in May and was admitted to County Middlesex War Hospital in England. Grant was granted two weeks furlough in June before rejoining his unit(2) in France in August. In February 1918 he spent two months in hospital with an eye injury, then in late April was wounded in the thigh and admitted to hospital in France, rejoining his unit in July. Grant was again admitted to hospital - septic toe - in September, rejoining his unit in November. In December he was granted two weeks leave in England, rejoining his unit in France in early January 1919.

Grant returned to England in April 1919 and embarked for Australia aboard the Port Lyttleton in June, returning to Australia in August. He was discharged from the AIF in September.

In 1923 Grant was living at Morven, Bacchus Marsh, VIC and was still in Bacchus Marsh in 1942 when he enlisted in the Australian Army, 20th Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps - V400028. He was discharged from the Army in 1945.

Grant died at Bacchus Marsh, VIC in 1965, aged 76. He is buried at Maddingley Cemetery, Bacchus Marsh.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour, the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour and the Roll of Honour of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Bacchus Marsh. He is also remembered in the Coimadai Avenue of Honour.

Notes

  1. His WW1 records and the indexes of BDM indicate he was born about 1889 but his WW2 records give his date of birth as 20/4/1891
  2. In July 1917 he was an informant into the death of William Tregoning and gave his unit as the 22nd Battalion.
