Henry (aka Harry) was born in Footscray, Vic. to Stephan Charles Holman and Mary Ann Hokin.
Prior to enlisting he was probably working in Bacchus Marsh as a Barman and a member of the local football team. Henry enlisted in the AIF, 5th Battalion on the 17th of August 1914, aged about 26. He embarked aboard the HMAT A3 Orveitto on the 21st October 1914, arriving at Albany WA on the 26th October. The Orveitto left Albany on the 1st November as flagship of a 36 ship convoy, stopping at Colombo before arriving at Suez in late November or early December.
In April 1915 Henry transferred to the 4th Company ASC. June saw him disciplined for being AWOL, losing two days pay and confined to barracks for seven days. July saw him hospital for a few days and in September he was again AWOL, losing five days pay and confined to barracks for 14 days. In December Henry was briefly detached for convoy duty after which he was get again AWOL and confined to barracks for 7 days. In February 1916 he was again AWOL before transferring to the 14th Company ASC. Shortly before embarking for France, in June he was disciplined for drunkenness, forfeiting 28 days pay.
In January 1917 he was detached for duty with the 12th FAB before finally transferring to the 27th Company ASC. In early 1918 Henry was granted leave in the UK where he spent three weeks in hospital. Not fully recovered he marched to to the ASC Training Depot. In August he was AWOL one last time before embarking for home aboard the HT Borda in late October, disembarking in Australia in December and discharged in February 1919.
Henry died at Bundoora, Vic. in 1967.
He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour.
