John was a machinist and gave his address as Prahran, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF, 6th Battalion on the 17th of August 1914 - shortly after the war was declared - aged 23. At the time he was serving in the 55th Battalion of the Australian Infantry Regiment. John embarked aboard the HMAT A20 Hororata in October, disembarking in Egypt in December.

John landed at Gallipoli on the 25th of April 1915 and was later wounded in action - possibly during 1st Battle of Krithia when the 2nd Brigade, of which the 6th Battalion was a part, lost almost a third of its strength.

On the 11th of May on board the HMT Southland, bound from Gallipoli to Alexandria, Egypt, John died of his wounds and was buried at sea.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour. He is also remembered at the Lone Pine Memorial, Turkey.

He is listed on the Malmsbury Primary School Honor Roll. I have also received information that John is also remembered on the Kyneton Town Hall Memorial Wall. I have not confirmed this yet.
