
William Bennett was born at Coimadai, VIC in 1895 to Joseph Bennett and Mary Ann Gulliver.
William Bennett was a baker when he enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne on the 3rd of July 1915 at the age of 21. Allotted to the 1st Divisional Bakery, 31st Battalion, he embarked at Melbourne for service overseas aboard the HMAT A62 Wandilla in November. After a brief stop in Eygpt where he transferred to the 1st Field Bakery, 13th Australian Army Service Corps, he arrived in France in March 1917.
During his service he was hospitalised a number of times with mumps, a skin infection and finally in February 1919 contracted Influenza and was transferred to England. He embarked for Australia aboard the Shropshire in April, returning to Australia in June 1919.
William was discharged from the AIF on the 8th of July 1919 and in 1920 married Eva Mary Robertson. They later lived at Brighton Beach and Sunshine, VIC. William Bennett died in 1978 aged 88.
He is listed on the Roll of Honour for Bacchus Marsh, held by the RSL at Bacchus Marsh and the Roll of Honour for the Coimadai State School and also the Holy Trinity Church Roll of Honour held by the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Bacchus Marsh.
