Private Patrick Cecil Barry

Patrick Cecil Barry was born at Preston, VIC, in 1890, to John Joseph Barry and Susannah Tulk. Patrick had three brothers, Percival, Henry and Richard, who are also remembered in the Avenue.

He was a miner when he enlisted in the AIF, at Gormanston, TAS, in October 1916, at the age of 22 - his parents lived in Bacchus Marsh. Assigned to the 14^th Battalion, 24^th Reinforcements, he embarked from Melbourne aboard the HMAT A70 Ballarat on the 19^th of February 1917, disembarking at Devonport, England, on the 25^th of April - the Ballarat was torpedoed⁽¹⁾ by a submarine in the English Channel on the 25^th of April 1917 and sank the next day.

In August 1917 he proceeded overseas to France and in September received a gun shot wound to the face - he was admitted to hospital in England. After returning to France he was again wounded, gassed, in February 1918. At the end of May he suffered another gun shot wound, this time to the shoulder. He returned to hospital in England and embarked for Australia aboard the HMAT Shropshire in April 1919 as an invalid.

Patrick Barry returned to Australia in May 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on the 5^th of July 1919. He died at Bacchus Marsh, VIC, in 1961, at the age of 71.

He is listed on the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
