William was born in 1895 in South Wigston, Leicestershire, England. He was a farmer at Parwan, VIC when he enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne, VIC on the 24th of July 1915, aged 25. He embarked aboard the HMAT A64 Demosthenes in December with the 13th Reinforcements, 8th Battalion, disembarking in Egypt in early 1916.

At the end of March 1916 William embarked from Alexandria, Egypt, disembarking at Marseilles, France in early April. In July the reinforcements joined the battalion but William was admitted to hospital before joining the battalion at the end of August. A month later he was again in hospital. Two days later he was discharged to the Base Depot, Etaples, France, before transferring to the 46th Battalion in October. In November he was again in hospital suffering from mumps. After being discharged from hospital William transferred back to the 8th Battalion in December.

At the beginning of February 1917 William was wounded in action - gunshot wound to the abdomen. Admitted to hospital in Rouen, France, he transferred to hospital in England in late February. Three months later William was discharged to furlough before embarking for Australia aboard the HMAT A14 Euripides in July, arriving back in Australia in September and discharged from the AIF in March 1918.

William died in NSW in March 1955.

He is listed on the Shire of Bacchus Marsh Roll of Honour and the Bacchus Marsh & District Roll of Honour.
